Wednesday 13th Oct...Assisi...more steps...more hills !!

Some rain overnight and a bit cloudy this morning but warm.
We have decided to have our first visit of Assisi today which is approx 6 miles down hill from our villa.
Cathedral de S Rufino which like all of the churches in Assisi has many astounding  frescos.
So many historic buildings and attractive narrow streets.
Lots of steps and steep slopes though !

A ceiling painting just in a side street arch

The top front of the Basilica di S Francesco. As well as the spiritual aspect of Assisi this actual building is just so incredible. The Basilica complex is composed of 2 churches built one above the other, the lower one dating from 1228-1230 and the upper 1230-1253 then a crypt was dug in 1818 which houses the tomb of St Francis.

We are quite surprised after Pisa and Firenze that there is not an admission charge, just voluntary donations,  for any of the churches including the Basilica

This artifact, a broken bell ?

It started to rain a good excuse for a coffee and more interior viewing.
Weather cheered up but we took off for the supermarket and a restock of supplies (smallish fridge so have to be organised !). We shall return for more but after yesterdays walking and me ending up on my backside we feel we have done enough steps and steep climbs for today !!
One of our observations of Assisi is how very clean and tidy it is and also that there is no visible damage from the 1997 earthquake.

  1. As always, stunning photos. You know I was struck by the photo of the fresco in the arch, Italy is like that, in the middle of nowhere, fo no apparant reason there is the most spectacylar piece of art, and everyone treats it as normal! Fabulous. My favourite European country.
